Psychiatric Consultation, Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis, Supervision
Dr. Sawicki works with patients in a number of different ways in both short and long term treatments. She sees patients for brief (1-3 session) and longer (5-10 session) consultations to help them answer certain questions with which they may be struggling. Sometimes patients are trying to clarify their thoughts and feelings around a life decision, to understand and address some type of pain, distress, or pattern of suffering, or wanting to re-evaluate a treatment plan that they have been pursuing. In particular, due to her training and experience as a psychoanalyst, she consults with patients on questions relating to whether psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis could be an appropriate and advantageous treatment for them to pursue. Often patients have had other types of treatment, including medications or prior psychotherapy, and feel that they need a treatment with additional depth to address issues that have been difficult to fix themself or through the means they have tried thus far.
Dr. Sawicki provides treatments that can include use of medications, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis or a combination of these. The research on psychotherapy shows that the most important factor in the success of a therapy is the therapeutic alliance between therapist and patient - the strength of the relationship that is built by two people working together toward a common goal over time. Dr. Sawicki works flexibly using aspects of her medical and psychiatric training and elements from many types of therapy (psychodynamic, supportive, cognitive, behavioral, exposure etc). She particularly specializes in working with patients in psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis which are exploratory types of therapy aimed at helping patients understand themselves, their own minds, their emotions, and how unconscious mental processes (outside of their everyday awareness) may be impacting their behavior, mood, decisions, and relationships. The most impactful types of treatment usually involve a steady commitment of both patient and therapist to work at least weekly, or more than once a week, to understand things together over a period of weeks, months, or years. Sometimes a patient’s goals for treatment are clear at the beginning, sometimes they are not, and they often evolve, clarify, and change as the work unfolds. Psychotherapy and psychoanalysis can be intensive - taking energy, time, and money. Once a patient finds a process and a person that can truly help them, they often experience is as life-altering and valuable beyond estimation.
Appointments are generally available in-person, by telehealth (audio+video), or by telephone (audio only). These are subject to availability and clinical-appropriateness and are therefore individually determined. Discussion of how to meet is part of the consultation process.
